Last night I had the task of explaining to my 9 year old what happened in Boston. As a father, it pains me to even have to have that conversation with my kids. On the way to work this morning, I was listening to Mike and Mike in the Morning on the radio and one of them mentioned that this is the world we live in now. The world today is far different from when I was a kid. We didn’t have to worry about those things. We didn’t have to worry about kids playing outside in the front by themselves in the fear that someone with ill intentions could take them. This is our world. We have a world now where people make terribly bad decisions in order for them to gain some satisfaction that cause tremendous pain to those affected.
So what did I tell her, you ask? I simply told her this. In this world, there are crazy people. People who want to hurt others and don’t care what happens to anyone else. Here’s the thing about crazy people, if they’re crazy, they will find a way to get what they want. It doesn’t matter what laws we change, or how much we try to protect ourselves, crazy people will find a way to make things happen. In spite of all that, we can’t live our lives worried about what some crazy person is doing. As a marathoner myself, that could have been me. It could happen anywhere, at any time. But I will not be scared. I will not be afraid. I will continue to press onward in faith that I will grow to see all my girls walk down the aisle and maybe even one day (far far far in the future) have grandkids. What will you choose?
